(Lam 3:1-9 BHS-W4)

I am one who has seen affliction
under the rod of God’s wrath;
he has driven and brought me
into darkness without any light;
against me alone he turns his hand,
again and again, all day long.

He has made my flesh and my skin waste away,
and broken my bones;
he has besieged and enveloped me
with bitterness and tribulation;
he has made me sit in darkness
like the dead of long ago.

He has walled me about so that I cannot escape;
he has put heavy chains on me;
though I call and cry for help,
he shuts out my prayer;
he has blocked my ways with hewn stones,
he has made my paths crooked.
(Lam 2:8-15; 3:1-9 NRSV)

  2. No need to be afraid. This poetic tidbit from Lamentations was taken from by Benedictine Daily Prayer book. I thought it was an appropriate one to share on Good Friday. The threw in the Hebrew text for those who might be interested. :-)

    And you can read Psalm 22 for some other great allusions to the crucifixion. In fact, the part about broken bones and torn away flesh is nearly word for word... Jeremiah probably had the psalm echoing in his ear or the other way around!

    Fear not... He was wounded for our transgressions and by his stripes we are healed!
